Keane
Bridge
The
Keane Bridge is a notable landmark of Sylhet city. Hanging over on the river of surma is
a bridge, made of iron and steel looked like a bow is gateway of sylhet. This
is popularly known as Surma Baridge. This iron bridge was built in the year
1936 over the river Surma and was named after the British governor of Assam of
the time, Sir Micheal Keane (1937-1874). The bridge is 1150 feet lengths and 18
feet breadth. It is a steel tie
up bridge and such bridges are one of the oldest
types of modern bridges. About Taka 56 lac had been spent to built the
bridge. During
the liberation war in 1971, a portion of the bridge was blown off by dynamite.
After the war, the bridge was repaired and opened for light vehicles.
Bangladesh Railway repaired the bridge with concrete metals in 1977.
It is still a star attraction for the tourist.
Ali Amzad Historical watch
Standing over the
keane bridge, if anybody peers down will catch the sight of Ali Amzad clock. It
is said that, Ali Amzad , the famous Zamidar of Pritrimpasa was invited to see
Delhi and thereby charmed by the clock made with the instigation of the
princess of Delhi. He also craved to build the same and eventually made it with
the similar design & pattern. It's now called Ali Amzad watch, located at Chadnighat, Sylhet. At far sight, one can easily presume it as a church,
because of its structure. I wonder what was the color of corrugated sheets at
the early days. I find the architecture of it is
also interesting Tower is standing one an octagonal base,
clock chamber is rectangular and lastly the crest of tower is a triangular
pyramid. Unlike other two dials this is not a part of a big
building, it is build only to be a clock tower, and this is the best
distinctive feature of this clock tower with others of Bangladesh. The clock is
now active after a long time break. District Council of Sylhet maintains and
provide mechanical support, these days.
this clock is unique and
notable attraction to tourist.

Sylhet International Stadium
The Sylhet stadium was built in the year 2007. The stadium is surrounded by
hills and has a scenic view. England Lions, England Under-19 and Nepal
Under-19 have played here. The stadium is being expanded and renovated to host
matches of the ICC World Twenty20 2014. The renovation began in June
2013 and ended in mid-November 2013 in time for ODI match against Sri
Lanka in January 2014. The main pavilion building and the media
center has been constructed, floodlights have been installed, and
seating arrangement are being modified. The most striking part of the
stadium is the newly built, country’s first ‘Green gallery’.
For the record, the stadium was
established in the year 2007 by the former finance minister late Saifur
Rahman. The stadium is of 615 feet height and 485 feet width. It is
surrounded by green hills, hillock and loads of natural beauty around
the stadium which is not quite often seen in Bangladesh. The venue is
ideally located and can be reached in 15 minutes from either the airport
or the town center.
The cricket committee of Sylhet
Divisional Sports Association has also helped in the project, although
they have no direct authority of the stadium or the construction work.
They are acting as a conduit in various ways, like making sure each of
the two roads and walkways are built around the ground.
The General Secretary of the Sylhet
division cricket organization ADHOC committee Jumma Abbas informed that,
“To make the stadium prepared for the world cup t-20 2014, the project
of around 60-65 lakhs is going on with a great speed. The work was
started on 7th of June. Around 400 different types of labors
are working there.” He also stated that the gallery, floodlight, indoor
stadium and media center is not prepared yet. This are the things which
have to get prepared .
This has been said that, this stadium
will be one of the 5 most beautiful stadiums in the world for the
natural beauty it is surrounded by.
